  • Objectives
  • : 
    The Academic Staff College, Burdwan University was established in the year 1989 to cater the vital need for improving the status of the teacher as well as to inculcate dynamism in higher education system by providing opportunities for professional and career advancement as proposed in the National Policy on Education, 1986 (NPE). The main objectives of the ASC are to enable the newly appointed teacher to understand the signaficance of education in linkage between education and economic and socio-cultural development and thirdly to acquire and improve basic skills of teaching keeping abrest with the development in subject.

     
  • Activities
  • : 
    Generally, ASC is entrusted to conduct Orientation Programmes, Refresher Courses and courses or workshop for Principals, Coordinator, Deans, etc. Other than these programmes the ASC sometime conducts Seminars, Computer Awareness Programme for teachers etc. One of the most important activities of the ASC in the university is that it had already published the edited volumes of book which are very useful to the teachers attending the OPs and RCs including two volumes of News Letter ACADEMY.

     
  • Eligibility
  • : 
    Applications on Prescribed Form only obtainable from the Burdwan University website (www.buruniv.ac.in) duly forwarded by the Principal of the College/Head of the Department, Dean of the Faculty, Registrar are invited from College/University Assistant Professors (GR I, II & III), Associate Professors for the following Refresher Courses (21 days) and Orientation Programmes (28 days), Summer & Winter Schools (21 days) and Short-term Courses (2 to 6 days). Faculties working in the Universities and Colleges, which are included under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, even though may not yet be fit under 12B of the UGC Act are eligible to participate. It has also been agreed that the teachers of colleges, who do not come within the purview of Section 2(f), but have affiliated to a University and serving at least 2 years uninterruptedly, are permitted to participate.

    The temporary, ad hoc, part time, and contractual teachers (also from Private colleges) who have been teaching for at least two academic sessions in an institution which has been affiliated to a university for at last two years may be allowed to participate in the Orientation Programme/ Refresher Course / Summer & Winter Schools to enhance their skills.

    For Refresher Courses (RC), participation in an Orientation Programme (OP) is a pre-requisite qualification. However, in exceptional case, a teacher may be allowed to complete a RC prior to completion of an OP. Also there should be a minimum gap of one-year between two courses subject to relaxation as per UGC rules.

    For Orientation Programme (OP), newly appointed teachers up to six years of continuous service and all those teachers who require orientation programme for getting higher grade may also apply.

    Summer & Winter Schools are open to all teachers whosoever is willing to participate subject to stream variation for either a Summer or a Winter School (Science/Arts/Humanities). The certificate issued to the participants will be considered equivalent to one Orientation Programme or one Refresher Course for CAS.

    For Short Term Courses, only senior faculty members having at least 10 years of teaching experience should apply.

  • Library Facilities
  • : 
    The College has built-up a small useful library for the use of participants as well as university teachers and research fellow. It has 2854 volumes of books and some useful periodicals. The reading room consists of internet enabled computer facility which is well connected with the Central Library. Participants have access to the Central Library on the main campus of the University also. Access to E-Journals and Databases can be available under the UGC-Infonet Scheme.
